5 Ways to a Healthy Skin

Hey everyone! As some of you may know, having a healthy skincare routine is high on my list especially as we continue to age. Your skin is the biggest organ of your entire body and the only one you have, so taking good care of it can definitely prolonge the signs of aging.

So it goes without saying that I was pretty excited to team up with Aveeno and bring you six posts in the next several weeks promoting healthy skin. First post as you can tell from the title above is listing out 5 ways that you can add to your everyday regimen to promote healthy skin.


  1. Protect yourself from the sun
    • One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun.  You only need 10 minutes of sun exposure to have sufficient Vitamin D for your body–anything more can cause wrinkles, age spots and other problems that could lead to increase risk of skin cancer.
    • Always, always use sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 or above.  I typically use at least SPF 30 and have even used sunscreen with SPF of 100 before when I found one while visiting the Canyons in Arizona.  Even while I was in Cancun, I wore sunscreen every single day using one for body and one specifically for face.  I also wore a hat, sunnies and stayed in the shade most of the time. Believe it or not, I’ve even brought an umbrella when I went touring to Chichen Itza, which was the norm there apparently overlooking a sea of umbrellas.  
    • Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours and more often when swimming or doing any rigorous activities. Also remember to apply sunscreen to your feet, back of hands and necks, since those are the easiest spots to miss when applying and also easiest spots to show signs of aging.
  2. Drink lots of water and moisturize daily
    • Check for skin hydration by softly pinching an area of skin together for example on the forehead noticing for fine lines. If none, your skin is hydrated.  If there are some, drink more water!  Skin loses elasticity as we age, so drinking more water (approximately 8 glasses per day) will provide enough hydration to keep your skin plump and firm.
    • Drinking more water also helps to detoxify the body getting rid of toxins and cleaning your body from the inside out.
    • Applying moisturizer daily can also help your skin stay firm and healthy
  3. Eat a healthy diet 
    • A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. You know the saying “you are what you eat”.  That saying holds very true in this case.  When you eat too much fatty food, your skin can break out easily. When you eat more fruits and veggies high in yummy nutrients can create a more glowy and firm skin.
    • A diet rich in the vitamins below and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates promotes younger looking skin.
      • Vitamin C for smooth and taut skin– aids in the production of collagen.
      • Vitamin A to add brightness to skin– carrots, spinach and sweet potatoes are full of beta-carotene that converts to Vitamin A and acts as an antioxidant to prevent cell damage and premature aging.
      • Vitamin E for young and soft skin–food like almonds that are high in Vitamin E tends to help skin hold in moisture making skin look younger.  Vitamin E also helps to combat free radicals protecting skin from sun damage.
  4. Exercise at least 2-3x a week
    • This goes without saying that exercise is great for your overall health.  It also helps to promote healthy circulation, which helps your skin looking vibrant and glowy. By increasing blood flow, it helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital.
    • Regular exercise also helps to firm up skin to improve elasticity.
  5. Always remove your makeup
    • Removing your makeup every night helps your skin breathe and rejuvenate while you sleep.
    • Too many products on your skin can clog up pores and cause unnecessary acne.

Of course, there are plenty more ways to promote healthy skin that are not included in the list above, but as long as you have a skincare regimen in place, then who needs the fountain of youth, am I right? =) So here’s to a healthy skin and have a great Wednesday!
